Wangkatjungka Aboriginal
Community

Welcome to Wangkatjungka.

Wangkatjungka Community is situated about 120Kms South East of Fitzroy Crossing in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. The population fluctuates around 120 people and is considered the 'hub' for many other surrounding communities.

The community is situated between 3 cattle stations that are Christmas Creek Stn., Bulka Stn. and Beefwood Park Stn. A few of the local men work on the stations during mustering season, but most of the community is employed by the local CDEP (Community Development Employment Program) working in the community in areas such as maintenance, gardening / landscaping, essential services maintenance, child care and aged care, as well as working in the local school and store.

The community has a large school with about a dozen teachers. The school also services the surrounding communities and has over a hundred children on the roll.

There is also a health clinic next door to the store, that is attended by nurses 2 or 3 days a week and has a doctor visit once or twice a week.

The general store stocks mainly food lines, but also carries many other lines including clothing, whitegoods, computer games, hardware and car parts.

The community is self sufficient in that like all other communities in the Kimberleys, it has its own power station, bores for water supply and a sewerage system.

During the wet season, from late November through to March, it is likely that roads are cut due to flooding. Many of the residents move out over this period, staying with family either in Fitzroy Crossing, or further afield. The community does still operate, including the clinic and store, which are both well prepared for the disruptions due to flooding.
